Unlike the unredeemed Scrooge of the beginning of the story, described as a “squeezing, wrenching Similarly, "Scrooge" might be a take on the word "scrouge," meaning to squeeze, recalling Dickens' description of Scrooge as "a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner." Likewise, "Scrooge" sounds like "screw," which was an old British slang word for a miser. Scrooge’s niece played well upon the harp; and played among other tunes a simple little air (a mere nothing: you might learn to whistle it in two minutes), which had been familiar to the child who fetched Scrooge from the boarding-school, as he had been reminded by the Ghost of Christmas Past. Scrooge then strives to make the most of his newfound Christmas joy, including a visit to his nephew, Fred’s for dinner, and Dickens concludes by telling us that the redeemed Scrooge “became as good as a man as the good old city knew…” Dickens employs the visitations of the three ghosts as his vehicle: Christmas past, present, and future. This play was about a grumpy character, Scrooge. Scrooge hated Christmas and was nasty towards others.
